Located behind an existing residence in Puttur, coastal Karnataka, The Backyard was conceived as a shared family gathering space for clients who live abroad and return to their native home only occasionally.

While the house already contained sufficient indoor rooms, the need was for a place that could bring the family together- an environment that reconnects them with the cultural and climatic qualities of the region they grew up in.

The project draws from the traditional architectural language of coastal Karnataka and interprets it through a contemporary spatial approach. A central open courtyard forms the core of the design, around which a series of platforms and partially defined spaces are arranged for dining, cooking, and quiet reading.

Sloping roofs finished with traditional Mangalore tiles shelter the courtyard and respond to the region’s heavy monsoon rains.

Red oxide flooring is introduced across the gathering areas, drawing from a long-standing regional building tradition. Its smooth, earthy surface carries a tactile familiarity associated with many traditional homes of the region, while its thermal properties help keep the floor relatively cool underfoot.

Open edges, shaded roofs, and continuous cross ventilation ensure climatic comfort while maintaining a strong visual and sensory connection with the surrounding landscape, allowing the backyard to function as a calm, breathable setting for family gatherings.
